Below is the full list of Vectorworks keyboard shortcuts, with Mac and Windows keys side by side.

Many shortcuts are one or two letters tied to the Basic palette (2 Line, 4 Rectangle, 9 Wall), and the standard views sit on the numeric keypad.

To memorize Vectorworks hotkeys, download the PDF cheat sheet below, print it, and keep it next to your monitor until the shortcuts stick.

Top 10 most-used Vectorworks shortcuts

If you only learn ten, learn these. They cover the bulk of a typical drafting and modeling session in Vectorworks.

Render any Vectorworks design in 10 seconds

Once these shortcuts are second nature, the render becomes the next bottleneck. MyArchitectAI turns any Vectorworks view into a photoreal render in seconds. No extra software, no GPU upgrade.

Lesser-known Vectorworks shortcuts worth memorizing

Eight defaults that beginners miss but seasoned drafters use every session. None of them appear on the standard menu items, which is why they fly under the radar.

KeyActionWhy it matters
YToggle SmartCursor CuesHides or shows the on-screen snap hints. Useful when the cues obscure your work.
BX-ray Select ModeLets you click through to objects hidden behind others. Toggles on and off.
Hold ZSnap LoupeA magnifier overlay at the cursor. The fastest way to pick the exact snap point in dense geometry.
TSet Smart Point / Edge Snap LockLock an inferred edge or point so it stays as a reference while you draw.
GSet DatumDrops a temporary reference point for relative coordinate input.
RRepeat Last CommandRe-runs whatever you just did. Faster than digging through the menu.
CCIncrease Zoom 2x (chord)Press C twice quickly. Mirrors XX for deselect all.
Backspace / DeleteUndo last clicked pointWorks mid-draw on walls, polylines, and path objects. Saves you from cancelling the whole operation.

How to change keyboard shortcuts in Vectorworks

Vectorworks bundles tools, menus, and shortcuts into named workspaces. Editing a shortcut means editing the active workspace. The file lives outside the document, so your shortcut changes follow you between projects.

  1. Open the Workspace Editor.Tools → Workspaces → Edit Current Workspace (Ctrl + Shift + Alt + W on Windows, Cmd + Shift + Option + W on Mac).
  2. Switch to the Shortcuts tab. The tree on the left lists every tool palette and menu. Expand the group that contains the command you want to remap.
  3. Click the existing shortcut. The current key combination appears next to the command. Click it to highlight, then press the new combination you want. Vectorworks warns you if the chord is already taken.
  4. Save the workspace. Click OK to write the change. Vectorworks stores workspaces as .vww files in the user folder. Copy that file to another machine to carry your setup across installations.

A handful of shortcuts cannot be modified in the Workspace Editor. Numeric keypad view switches (1 Num through 9 Num), mouse double-clicks, and OS-reserved combinations are locked. Arrow-key behavior is configured in Vectorworks Preferences → Edit tab, not the Workspace Editor.

Where Vectorworks shortcuts differ on Mac and Windows

Looking for the Vectorworks shortcuts Mac users rely on? The Mac column in every table above is already populated. Most Vectorworks shortcuts only swap Ctrl for Cmd between platforms. A handful are genuinely different chords. Memorize these if you ever move between a Mac and a PC for the same project:

How to memorize Vectorworks shortcuts faster

  • Start with the Basic palette numbers. The four most-used drawing tools all sit on the number row: 2 Line, 4 Rectangle, 6 Circle, 3 Arc. Notice the pattern. Each one's variant is Alt/Option + the same number (Alt+2 for Double Line, Alt+4 for Rounded Rectangle).
  • Keep the numeric keypad in reach. The standard views (Top, Front, Right Iso, Left, etc.) live on the keypad keys, not the number row above the letters. Vectorworks tracks which one you press. On a laptop, set Fn-lock or use an external keypad.
  • Recognize the modifier pattern. In Vectorworks, Shift on a 2D tool usually invokes the 3D equivalent: 1 is Text, Shift + 1 sets the Working Plane. 7 is Fillet (2D), Shift + F is Fillet Edge (3D). Once you see the rule, the 3D tools stop feeling random.
  • Print the cheat sheet for your OS. Two PDFs are linked at the top, one for Windows and one for Mac. Pin the right one to the wall behind your monitor. Most people stop needing it after about two weeks.
  • Back up your workspace. If you customize, find the .vww file in your Vectorworks user folder and copy it somewhere safe. Reinstalls and version upgrades wipe it otherwise.
