How do I upscale in Midjourney?
Inside Midjourney: in v7, pick an image from the grid (U1 to U4), then choose Upscale (Subtle) to keep the look or Upscale (Creative) to add detail. Both double the resolution and top out at 2048px. In v8.1 those options are gone; you add --hd to generate at 2048px directly. To go past 2048px, you need an external upscaler like this one.
Can Midjourney upscale an existing image?
No. Midjourney’s upscaler only works on images generated inside Midjourney; there’s no way to upload a photo or an old render and upscale it there. The Editor accepts uploads for editing, but not for upscaling. That’s the exact gap this tool covers: upload any image and take it to 4K.
What’s the best way to upscale Midjourney images?
Get as many real pixels as you can from Midjourney first: the built-in upscale in v7 or --hd in v8.1 takes you to 2048px. Then run 2x here to reach 4096px. If all you have is a 1024px grid image, 4x gets you to the same place in one step, though starting from 2048px keeps a bit more genuine detail.
Can Midjourney edit an existing image?
Yes. The Midjourney Editor accepts uploaded images and can inpaint (erase a region and regenerate it), retexture materials and lighting, and make prompt-based edits. What it can’t do is upscale an upload; for that you’re back to an external tool.
Can Midjourney extend an existing image?
Yes. Pan and Zoom Out in the Editor extend the canvas on both generated and uploaded images, out to about 2x. One caveat: extended results can come back at lower resolution than the source, so an outpainted image is often a good candidate for upscaling right after.
Can I upscale Midjourney videos?
Not here; this tool is image-only. Midjourney’s video model generates 5-second clips at 480p, or 720p on higher plans, and there’s no native video upscaler yet. Most people run exported clips through a desktop video upscaler. If you just need one sharp frame, export a still and upscale it here.
How can I improve Midjourney image quality?
At generation time, use --hd in v8.1 (or the quality and stylize settings in v7) and pick the model version deliberately. After generation you have two options: upscaling adds resolution, and an enhancer improves the pixels you already have, things like sharpening, color, and compression artifacts. If your image is big enough but looks soft, try an AI enhancer instead of upscaling
